Tuesday Teaser/Opening ~ The Martian

I'm sure everyone has heard of The Martian: A Novel by Andy Weir by now. I'm especially curious to read it because it started life as a self-published novel. So let's get to it.

Blurb:
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Opening:
  I'm pretty much fucked.
  That's my considered opinion.
  Fucked.
Six days into what should be the greatest two months of my life, and it's turned into a nightmare.

Teaser:
I would only be "in command" of the mission if I were the only remaining person.
What do you know? I'm in command.

Okay, yes, I fudged a little. It's three sentences. And they weren't randomly selected. I was going to abide by the rules, but when I hit this at the 2% mark and it made me laugh (which I hadn't expected,) I knew this was what I wanted to share.

Have you read it yet? Or did you just figure you'd see the movie?

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

  2. I want to read this really badly so I decided not to watch the film. Then Matt Damon annoyed me with ridiculous comments about diversity and it just hasn't happened. But your teasers make me want to read it so I'll have to get started!
Thanks for sharing :) I hope you have a great week and Christmas!

  3. I admit I went straight for the movie. I still do not know if I will read the book. I really liked the movie though. I have to wonder though if Watney is as perfect as he is in the movie. I kind of hope not. That may be reason enough to pick up the book.

    1. In the book, he's resourceful, but definitely not perfect. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I know they medium can change how the character is perceived in subtle ways.
