Another Except from A Dark & Stormy Knight

Georgia McKnight would do anything for her daughter Eden, but the one thing she's failed to do is to provide her daughter with a model of a good marriage. To remedy that, she's set her sights on converting her friendship with Daniel, the divorced father of Eden's best friend, into a romance. Unfortunately, she has to leave Dallas for the summer to help her parents in Hero Creek, where her ex-husband waits, scheming to win her back.

Sol McKnight has three passions in his life: riding bulls, his daughter, and the woman he married right out of high school. He's pulled some underhanded tricks over the years in order to keep his ex-wife single. He doesn't regret a single one of them because, well, they worked. But now, she's come home and he has a chance to win her back for good. If he's smart about it, maybe he can make her see that she belongs with him.

That's the back cover blurb from A Dark & Stormy Knight. I love second chance stories myself. I'm hoping you do, too, but just in case you're not hooked yet, I thought I'd share another excerpt from A Dark & Stormy Knight.

This occurs after Georgia is back in Hero Creek. She's stressed from dealing with her parents and runs into Sol at the local watering hole. The temptation to spend the night with him is too much for her to resist. Sol is, of course, delighted and is eager to get her home before she changes her mind. Of course, nothing ever goes smoothly for Sol.

They were a mile from Sol’s trailer when the red and blue lights flashed in his rearview mirror. “Shit, damn, and hellfire!” Sol ground out from clenched teeth. “We’re on a back road, for pity’s sake!” He eased over to the shoulder.

Georgia slid away as he reached into his hip pocket for his license. “Registration’s in the glove box. Would’ja get it for me?”

A flashlight shone in through his window. “In a hurry, Sol?”

“Not anymore,” Sol grumbled as he offered his license. “How you doing, Tyrone?”

“Better’n you.” Tyrone flashed the light at Georgia. “Then again, maybe not.”

Georgia shielded her eyes from the glare, and Tyrone lowered the light so it didn’t catch her dead-on. Sol stifled a growl as it lit up her chest.

“Hey, Georgia. I heard about your mama. How’s she doing?”

Georgia hesitated as though shifting mental gears then said, “She getting better, but it’s a slow process.” She pressed the registration into Sol’s hand. Sol offered it up, blocking the light that illuminated her chest.

“Heard you was taking care of her,” Tyrone said, talking around Sol. “How long you figure to be around?”

“You gonna write me a ticket, Tyrone?” Sol interrupted. This wasn’t a damned class reunion. The flashlight shifted to the license. “You been drinking tonight?” Tyrone’s voice lost its chatty quality.

“Not me,” Sol lied.

Tyrone pursed his lips and waited as though a little silence could get Sol to confess.

Sol kept his gaze steady and his mouth shut.

“You gonna keep driving like you got a bear on your tail?”

Sol sighed heavily. “No.”

“I should write you up anyway.”

Sol ground his teeth. Tyrone was one of the good ol’ boys, but Jake had gone out with Tyrone’s girlfriend a couple of months before when he was home on break from Texas A&M, and Tyrone wasn’t above making Sol pay for his brother’s indiscretion.

“You promise to slow it down, and I’ll let you go with a warning.”

“You got my word,” Sol said, grateful to the bone that Tyrone wasn’t pulling him out of the truck and making him do stupid human tricks to prove his sobriety. “Slow and easy.”

He took his time pocketing his wallet. By the time the registration was back in the glove box, Tyrone had driven away. Sol watched the patrol car’s taillights disappear down the road ahead of them then glanced at Georgia. Looking at her, his chest went all hollow, and he had to struggle to breathe. He couldn’t believe she was there with him. Then he saw the look on her face and knew she was about to change directions on him.

He reached over, hooked her neck, dragged her over to him, and laid a hard, wet kiss on her mouth before she could say it. He kissed her until he felt the resistance pass out of her, like an evil spirit being exorcised.

I love you. If his lips hadn’t been busy, he would have said it out loud. The close call made him pull back.

She didn’t want to hear that. At least not from him.

Poor Sol. He's really going to have to up his game if he wants to win Georgia back.

A Dark & Stormy Knight is available at Amazon and will soon be available at other major online retailers.

It's Release Day!

Okay, make that release day plus one. A Dark & Stormy Knight went live on Amazon around 5 p.m. yesterday. I'm still working on the file to load to Smashwords who will distribute it to Barnes & Noble and other venues, but that should be done soon, but it's there on Amazon, so I'm counting it.

To celebrate, I thought I'd share a snippet and introduce you to Georgia's grandmother. She's a feisty old lady. A lot of fun in her own right.

“There you are,” Grams said. “I wanted to let you know I’m leaving as soon as Delores gets here.”

“Are you sure you don’t want something to eat before you go?” Georgia brushed off the seat of her jeans before following her grandmother inside.

“Not a chance,” Grams said, walking and talking as she checked the contents of her purse for the forty-seventh time. “Cecelia’s son was up from the gulf last week, and he always brings her a butt load of cracked crab that she serves on these fancy crackers. I ain’t spoiling my appetite when I can pig out on that.” She closed her purse. “Oh, there’s Delores.”

Georgia looked out the living room window to see an older Cadillac pull in. Grams hung the handle of her purse over her arm and headed out. Georgia stood in the open screen door, ready to grab for her if she missed her footing on the steps. When Grams reached the yard without mishap, Georgia looked toward the car.

Had Delores gotten out? She didn’t see her anywhere. A movement from inside the car caught her attention. It looked like . . . She squinted. A hand. Was someone waving at her?

Holy hell. Delores had always been petite, but age had shrunk her to the size of a squirrel. She could barely see over the steering wheel. In fact, she probably looked through it.

Georgia’s hands itched to grab Grams and forbid her to ride with Delores, but since she wasn’t Grams’ mama, grounding her wasn’t an option. Grams would just call her a worrywart and insist on going anyway. Hoping this wasn’t the last time she’d see her grandmother alive, Georgia waved hesitantly back as Grams got in the car.

Her daddy’s pickup pulled in as Delores and Grams were about to pull out. The pickup stopped next to them as though her daddy planned to talk to Delores from his open window, but Delores pulled out as if she hadn’t noticed, and Georgia again questioned why she’d let Grams get in that car. Was this a preview of what she had to look forward to when Eden and her friends started driving? Hell, no, Georgia decided as her Daddy parked the pickup to come in for dinner; Eden she could ground

I can't help wishing I'd had a grandmother like this. Hope you like her.

A Dark & Stormy Knight - First Peek

I finally have a finalized cover for A Dark & Stormy Knight. Isn't it pretty?

I planning to release in December (God willing and the creek don't rise).

To celebrate, I'm posting a snippet. This book  has a little different tone than what I've previously published because the humor in A Dark & Stormy Knight comes more from the context of knowing the characters rather than being stand-alone scenes, like the one in Knight of Hearts where Mac goes shopping for body oils.

So . . . just the tiniest of set-ups. Georgia is back in Hero Creek, helping her parents while her mother recovers from a stroke. Her feisty grandmother also lives with them.

“There you are,” Grams said. “I just wanted to let you know I’m leaving as soon as Delores gets here.”
“Are you sure you don’t want something to eat before you go?” Georgia brushed off the seat of her jeans before following her grandmother inside.
“Not a chance,” Grams said, walking and talking as she checked the contents of her purse for the forty-seventh time. “Cecelia’s son was up from the gulf last week, and he always brings her a butt-load of cracked crab that she serves on these fancy crackers. I ain’t spoiling my appetite when I can pig-out on that.” She closed her purse.

I hope you enjoyed this little sneak peak.

Six Sentence Sunday - Knight of Hearts #3

Back again, Sixers and fans, with another snippet from Knight of Hearts. This comes early in the story when Mac is talking with Rachel about getting back into the dating pool after the end of his twelve year marriage. Contrary as ever, Rachel has just accused him of only looking for "a good time."

"What's wrong with a good time?" Mac said, defending his position. "As long as it's mutual. It's not like I'm looking to take advantage. I'm not trying to impress anyone with how suave I am—"

Rachel couldn't help laughing—suave Mac was not.

Mac's eyes narrowed, obviously reading her reaction as an affront. "—or how rich, or even housebroken."

Six Sentence Sunday - Knight of Hearts #2

Welcome back, fans & sixers,

So I scoured Knight of Hearts, looking for a six sentence excerpt that would entertain. I found this one early in the story, when Rachel is coaching Mac on how to meet and pick up women. In desperation, she's dragged him to the gym and sicced him on an attractive blonde.

Watching them, a vague but unrelenting yearning grew in Rachel's gut. In spite of the frustration Mac could engender, Rachel admired his courage. He wanted back into the dating pool, and he was willing to risk his emotions and his ego, not just once—or even once a day—but over and over, and though he grumbled, he let her send him out to face the next rejection, sometimes with no recovery time in between.

The blonde bent over Mac, asking a question. His response made her laugh before she adjusted his weights, and an arrow seemed to take Rachel through the chest. She wanted that. She wanted someone to stand over her; someone who would encourage her and make sure she wasn't trying to lift too much weight by herself.

Coming from Rachel, who can be a bit of a pit bull, even internal vulnerability is uncommon, so I hope you enjoyed this little window into her soul.

Six Sentence Sunday - Knight of Hearts #1

Hi fans & fellow Sixers,

I realized today that I've posted exactly zero excerpts from Knight of Hearts. That hasn't been an oversight exactly. There's a twist in the middle of the story that makes it hard to pick something that doesn't give things away. It's also a very character-driven story, so a lot of what's fun (and funny) grows out of who the characters are and, without that knowledge, an excerpt doesn't have the full impact. So in choosing six sentences (always a challenge when one is so limited), I found this snippet from the blackest moment of the book for our hero Mac when he believes the woman he loves is beyond his reach. I hope you enjoy.

He was going to spend the rest of his life trying to figure out what he could have done differently.

Mac was tempted to save himself the grief and just pound his head to mush on brick facade of the store in front of him. He couldn't win. No matter what he did, in the end, he'd lose her.

He took a deep breath and turned his steps toward the hotel. If he had to lose her anyway, at least he could go out a hero.

Six Sentence Sunday

Welcome back, sixers. I've taken a break from clan McKnight. This is from an as yet untitled story featuring Cleo & Alec. They've both been having interesting fantasies about each other. Here, Alec finally makes a move toward living his fantasies.

Was it panic that made her heart race or something else? Cleo didn’t want it to be something else, but she was afraid it was because fear didn’t usually make her feel like melting, and it never, ever made her want to press up against a man and grind her pelvis against his. This, the angel on her shoulder whispered, is what happens when you let yourself fantasize indiscriminately.

Alec tugged on her lower lip, sucking into his mouth. Before she could stop herself, she made a small, hungry noise. His eyes opened, gleaming with heat and laughter.
He released her lip and took possession of her mouth.

Hope you enjoyed it.

To whet your lust for A Knight in Cowboy Boots, here's an excerpt:

For the second time that day, their clothes ended up on the floor. Maddie straddled him as she pushed him down onto the bed.

“You sure you wanna do this?” Zach asked. “I’ll get a lot of depth with you on top.”

She leaned over to kiss him. “You haven’t hurt me yet.”

Zach groaned with pleasure as she lowered herself onto him. She rocked up and back a few times, seating him deep inside her.
“Ride ‘em, cowgirl,” Zach muttered.

Maddie grinned in response. “Yee-haw.”

The words were barely out of her mouth when the front door opened. A freckle-faced girl with strawberry blonde hair was several steps into the room before she saw them. “Holy shit!”

Pandemonium engulfed the bed. Maddie dove into Zach’s chest, her startled scream shrill in his ear, as he grabbed a fistful of the bedspread to drag over the two of them.

Maddie gathered up the other side of the spread as she slid off Zach. Bunching it up in front of her breasts, she struggled to cover all the vital areas before she said, “Peggy! What are you doing here?”

When Maddie called her name, Peggy blushed redder than her hair and spun on her heel. Speaking over her shoulder, she said, “I thought you wanted me to sit for you. Didn’t you say you were covering the last half of Pete’s shift tonight?”

“Oh, crap. I forgot.” Maddie started to scramble off the bed but bounced back when the spread Zach was laying on refused to stretch that far. “Shit, I’m going to be late.” Caught with no good choices, she glanced at Peggy’s back before dropping the spread and scurrying to the wardrobe. The open door blocked Peggy from seeing anything above Maddie’s knees, but there was nothing wrong with the view from the bed. Zach rolled onto his side, the bedspread strategically draped over his hips, and propped his cheek on his palm to watch.

He’d known since puberty that he was an ass-and-legs man. As she hopped up and down, trying to get a leg into a pair of black slacks, Maddie only demonstrated she had the qualities he found most appealing.

Across the room, Peggy started babbling about how someone had been going out the front door as she was coming in and how sorry she was for not ringing the bell to warn Maddie she was on her way up, and how sorry she was to have just walked in, but she knew it was Jesse’s nap time, and she hadn’t wanted to disturb him, and how she’d never had any reason to expect that Maddie might be getting lucky . . .

Maddie appeared to hear none of it as she pulled a raspberry and pink print shirt from the armoire then turned, looking around wildly for a second before her eyes found what she sought near the bed. She shot Zach a pleading look. He scooted over to the edge and stretched until he could hook his fingers around a strap of the bra she’d so hastily discarded earlier.

She mouthed a “Thanks” when he tossed it to her.

Zach continued to watch as she put it on then leaned over to adjust her breasts into the cups. It wasn’t anywhere near what he’d been hoping the afternoon would bring, but it wasn’t a bad consolation prize. Aside from how quickly she dressed—something he would have bet no woman he’d ever known could do—he liked that she was too distracted to realize the show she was giving him.

“You can turn around now,” Maddie tossed at Peggy as she closed the wardrobe. She skirted the bed, scooping up Zach’s jeans as she passed and throwing them at him. Maddie picked up the brush on top of the dresser, flung her hair forward as she bent, and began attacking her mane. Zach sighed with contentment.

Jesse started fussing in his crib as the commotion finally woke him.
“I’ve got him,” Peggy said. She hauled Jesse out of the crib and held him against her chest. “Is he the roses guy?” Peggy whispered loudly, as though Zach couldn’t hear her. From the grin on her face, he suspected he met with her approval.

Maddie tossed her hair back as she straightened, revealing a pinker-than-usual complexion. “Uh—yeah. Peggy, this is Zach.” She pointed the hairbrush from him to the grinning girl. “Zach, Peggy. She’s a neighbor. And Jesse’s sitter.”

“I’m guessing there’s going to be more roses in your future,” Peggy predicted with a grin, the memory of her own embarrassment obviously already fading into the distant past.

Zach silently blessed her for the inspiration. Flowers never came to mind unless he needed to apologize, but if anyone deserved them just because, it was Maddie. Especially after the day they’d just had.

“I’ve got to put on makeup,” Maddie mumbled, heading for the bathroom with Peggy on her heels.

Zach took the opportunity to pull on his jeans. Down on his hands and knees, he searched under the bed for his socks.

“What a hunk!” he heard from the bathroom, followed by Maddie shushing the girl. Zach grinned to himself as he put on his shirt.
Socks in hand, he sat down on the bed. His boots came next.

“You ready, Zach?”

He chalked up another point for Maddie. A new land speed record for applying makeup.

“Yeah. Here’s your bag.”

“Are you going to button your shirt? You look like you’ve been mugged.”

He let Maddie see a lustful twinkle in his eyes. “Oh, I have been. There ain't no buttons left to button.”

“Ooh, Maddie!” Peggy said. “You go, girl.”

For the first time since Peggy walked into the room, Maddie stopped short. “You can’t walk into the hotel like that.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ve got another shirt in my room.”

“But you can’t walk into the hotel like that,” she persisted.

Zach wasn’t sure where her distress was coming from unless it had to do with his sister figuring out what they’d spent the day doing. He opened his mouth to reassure her again but stopped when she walked slowly across to the wardrobe and pulled out the last hanger. It held a faded blue work shirt like the ones he wore on the ranch.
She held the shirt against herself, and he would have sworn she breathed in the scent of it for a moment before she turned and offered it to him.

“Here. You can wear this.”

“You sure?” Zach asked, his hand closing around the hanger. He didn’t know why he asked, except it seemed as though she didn’t really want to part with the shirt. He was even more sure when she held onto the hanger as she considered the question. Not understanding the undercurrents of her emotions, he waited until she pulled her hand back.

“Yes. Leave your shirt. I’ll find the buttons.”

While she dug in her purse for her car keys, Zach sniffed the shirt. It smelled of sweat but only faintly, as though time rather than washing had faded the scent, but it fit well enough when he shrugged into it.

Six Sentence Sunday - A Knight in Cowboy Boots #9

This doesn't follow last week's SSS sample immediately, but it's pretty close behind.

When someone knocked insistently on the door at her back, Maddie’s hands clenched, her finger tightening on the trigger. The explosion sounded like a cannon going off in the room and the sharp smell of gunpowder filled the air. The bullet spun Zach around. He fell against the bed, and slid down until he was sitting on the floor beside it, facing away from her.

“Oh my God!” The gun fell from her numb fingers and bounced across the floor.

Back for another Six Sentence Sunday.

Who would guess that this would lead to a romance? Some guys are just impossible to drive off.

She jerked the gun free and, with both hands throttling the grip, pointed it as she turned.

“Whoa!” Instinctively, Zach backed up another step, his hands rising in the air, not in surrender, but as though denying he was any kind of threat.

He looked at her cautiously. If he had any sense, he’d look a lot more scared, Maddie thought. Couldn’t he see the way her hands were shaking?

This is the moment after their first time together. Maddie has just made a comment about Zach's "equipment."

Assault  weapon?” Zach repeated. “That there’s standard equipment, darlin’.”

“There’s nothing standard about that,” Maddie said.

“I didn’t hear you complaining.”

“Of course not. You sprang it on me when I was mentally incompetent.”

Six Sentence Sunday - All's Fair #1

Welcome.

This is from a piece I've been working on as a promotional short story. Georgia's just been giving her ex-husband a back rub, but he's now flipped over under her.

Sol's hand rose from her hip to trace her collarbone. The light touch jolted her, and Georgia's balance deserted her. She laid a hand on his stomach to brace herself and felt the muscles there tighten, becoming rock hard. He lifted his torso, his hand sliding around her neck to cup the base of her skull and pull her toward him. It was like sitting in a car on the freeway, watching a jackknifed eighteen-wheeler skidding sideways toward her. Nothing would get her out of the way in time.

Six Sentence Sunday - A Knight in Cowboy Boots #5

This is the "afterglow" moment from A Knight in Cowboy Boots. Hm. I guess that says it all.

Maddie felt as though someone had just hit a long-overdue pressure-release valve inside her. Or like she’d dropped a couple of fifty pound weights and been filled with helium.

She felt like melted ice cream.

Her second coherent thought was that Zach was damned heavy.

The phrase “dead weight” ran through her mind. If he weren’t breathing in her ear like an asthmatic steam engine, she would have thought she’d killed him.

Six Sentence Sunday - A Knight in Cowboy Boots #4

Before we get to the snippet, I have a question. I've notice a lot of folks choose steamy situations to pull their 6 from, others lean toward humor. So I'm taking an unofficial poll: Do you prefer steamy or humorous when you visit 6 sentence Sunday sites?

Now that that's out of the way . . .

In celebration of A Knight in Cowboy Boots coming out at Pink Petal Books next month, I've posted another snippet for your reading pleasure.

This occurs after Zach's sister Rachel made sure both Zach and Maddie went to church with her, so she could decide if she approves of Maddie. (Yes, Rachel has control issues.) When Zach and Maddie end up at her place afterward, things get a bit steamy until . . .

Zach closed his eyes and gritted his teeth. Lord, give me strength. “I don’t have a condom.”

“You don’t have a condom?” Maddie repeated as though he’d said he’d forgotten to bring his balls.

“Hey! I thought I was going to church with Jake and Rachel," Zach said. "Somehow it seems like God might doubt my sincerity if I start packing condoms to church!”

Thanks for stopping by, and I love it when you comment.

Six Sentence Sunday - A Knight in Cowboy Boots #3

Since A Knight in Cowboy Boots will be released soon, I thought it would be a good thing to continue sharing snippets from it so you can decide if you'll like it. Hopefully, you'll be intrigued because I can't imagine anything finer than sharing these characters with readers.

This is fairly self explanatory. Zach's family is in the business of breeding rodeo bulls, so he needs to check out a bull they're thinking about buying. He wants Maddie to go with him. So okay. I snuck in a couple of extra (short) sentences. We'll all pretend we didn't notice, right? And yes, that is a sexual innuendo.

“I’m thinking I oughta go to the Gladewater rodeo this week. I gotta make a decision about a bull. Since you ain’t seen a Texas rodeo, why don’t you and Jesse come with me?”

“Because everything is bigger and better in Texas?”

Zach wagged his eyebrows and smiled suggestively. “Ain’t I already proved that?”

Maddie laughed. “The evidence has been persuasive.”

A Knight in Cowboy Boots will be available in August. (Did I mention that already? Don't worry. I'll mention it again when the time is right.)

Six Sentence Sunday - Knight in Cowboy Boots #2

After a brief hiatus, I'm back with Six Sentence Sunday.

In my initial SSS post, I lamented about the challenge of finding six sentences that conveyed something worth anyone's time to read it. Finding that nugget seems to be getting easier. Maybe I've just figured how to recognize snippets that have possibilities. Anyway . . .

This if from A Knight in Cowboy Boots due to be released from Pink Petal Books in August. I should have a cover next month. So Excited. And a little nervous though I don't know why. I love their covers. That's what got them considered for the short-list when I decided to epublish.

The setup is simple. After spending several months on an offshore oil rig, Zach is spending a few days in Galveston before heading home to the family ranch. The woman he's just met intrigues him enough that he wants to stay a few extra days. He's just called home to tell his old-fashioned mother that he's going to be arriving later than anticipated.

“Have you met a woman?” Her tone was suspicious.

Zach closed his eyes and groaned silently. In his mamma’s eyes, nothing but a good paying job or a woman would keep one of her boys away from the ranch. And since he was in the city, undoubtedly, she would be a woman of loose moral character. Exactly the kind of woman her sons appreciated far more than their mamma did.
